"Paint what you love" may sound like a trope, but keen observation and a strong curiosity about the "subject" are key to translating one's artistic vision. I am fond of and fascinated most by animals. It’s a large and varied kingdom, with endless adaptations. That passion has informed my life-long artistic process and world view. I have a BFA in painting and printmaking, and currently focus on watercolor, ink, and pencil as mediums with over twenty years of teaching experience. It is highly rewarding to see others enjoying the creative process and meeting challenges with courage and enthusiasm.
I teach art from the ground up, which means you will gain new techniques each week that build on the previous lessons. You will not make a "painting in one day" or spend hours watching demos. Rather, you will build on your accomplishments and find your own style.
Beginning classes proceed with a lesson each week, to be completed by the entire class. Intermediate and advanced classes use goal setting and independent projects - plus some sharing of new techniques - to help students move forward.
As you work, I will offer suggestions, but it will be entirely up to you to decide whether-or-not to apply them. Through directed experimentation, you will expand your skill set and define your artistic process.
The artistic process stimulates the brain, reinforces and creates new neural pathways, and generates endorphins (so you feel good!). But growth as an artist can mean periods of frustration and discouragement. As your teacher, I am committed to helping you work through any struggles or blocks you may encounter and help you increase your capacity as an artist.
I often compare the learning process to juggling. The challenge is to increase the number and types of objects you juggle with proficiency. If you never “drop all the balls,” then you are not challenging yourself. In other words, a “set back” is usually progress in disguise!
Thank you for your excellent instruction that has changed my painting experience from frustrating to truly enjoyable. Now it’s hard to stop! – Helen W.
I have learned so much from you and have achieved way more than I ever would have thought myself capable of doing. You are so patient, caring, and fun – and an excellent teacher. – Robin M.
Jennifer is teaching a wide variety of techniques and encourages us to try thing our own way as well. I took this class with very little experience and I love the way I’ve been able to dive right in and enjoy it. – Carol W.
This class is a great way to explore a new experience, in a fun, student-friendly format. This one is a winner! - Jill G.
Jennifer is the best art instructor I’ve ever had – she is skilled herself but is also very supportive, patient, and encouraging. I have made what I consider is great progress under her tutelage! – Kathy B.
Jennifer is an inspiring teacher. She has a knack for recognizing and drawing out the artist in each of her students. – Keely K.
Supportive, clear instructions, enthusiastic, likable – such a great teacher!
– Cathy T.
